Cordoba Short Break

One building alone is reason enough to put Córdoba high on your itinerary: the mesmerizing multiarched Mezquita. One of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings, the Mezquita is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe’s biggest, most cultured city. But today’s Córdoba is much more than the Mezquita. With a lot to see and do, some charming accommodation, and excellent restaurants and bars, it merits far more than the fleeting visit many travellers give it. Córdoba’s real charms unfold as you explore the winding, stone-paved lanes of the medieval city to the west, north and east of the gaudy touristic area immediately around the Mezquita, wandering between wrought-iron balconies and lamps, potted plants, overhanging trees, golden-stone buildings and verdant interior patios, emerging every few minutes on yet another quaint little hidden plaza.

Day 2Cordoba Highlights

Your complete guided tour of Cordoba will begin with the undisputed jewel of the city, the Cordoba Mosque-Cathedral, the most famous monument in the city, and a sight only comparable to the famous Alhambra in Granada. On a tour of its interior, we’ll discover all its secrets and you’ll be left in no doubt as to why it’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

The tour then continues in the narrow cobblestone streets of the Jewish Quarter, one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods, which was home to the Jewish community between the 10th and 15th centuries.  Along our route, we’ll enter the Souk, or municipal market; and the Synagogue, the only one in Cordoba to have escaped destruction during the years of persecution.

The tour then finishes with a visit to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, or the Castle of the Christian Monarchs. This 14th century fortress-palace was the main place of residence of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. As you explore its different rooms and the spectacular gardens and courtyards in which the Mudejar style can still be seen, you’ll hear all about the legendary historical events that have taken place here. Inside, you’ll also visit the Royal Baths of Doña Leonor, built and named in honour of King Alfonso XI’s mistress.

Important information

Depending on availability, it is possible that this tour will be unable to enter the Synagogue in the Cordoba Jewish Quarter. In these exceptional circumstances, you’ll visit the Caliphal Baths instead. These Arab Baths are an incredible archaeological reminder of Medieval Muslim Cordoba.

Day starts at 09:50 AM and ends at 02:00 PM
