Vietnam in Style

Vietnam in Style – Drive across rural northern Vietnam to Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s first capital. After exploring the historic citadel’s two surviving shrines, take a sampan down the river through the rice terraces to the holy Tam Coc Caves. Massive limestone karsts protrude from the lush rice fields, giving the area its moniker, ‘Halong on Land’. French influences can be found all over the streets of Hanoi, and a boat trip will allow you to appreciate the lovely scenery of Ha Long Bay. In Central Vietnam, visit the forbidden city of Hue. Take an overnight ride on the Mekong Delta and enjoy the gastronomic pleasures of the floating market.

Discover the enchanting city of Hanoi, which is frequently called the “Paris of the East,” and marvel at its picturesque lakes, tree-lined boulevards, and colonial buildings painted a sunny yellow.
An impressive marble and granite structure, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum houses the preserved body of the famous revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh MausoleumA visit to this site is a good way to begin your exploration of the area. Located nearby is the One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist temple constructed in 1049. Its wood exterior resembles a lotus bloom, and it rests on a solitary stone pillar. What follows is a visit to Vietnam’s first national university, the Temple of Literature, which dates back to the late eleventh century.
In the afternoon, take a fascinating tour of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups at the Museum of Ethnology (Mondays closed). The museum has a vast collection of traditional clothing and items from these groups. Return to Hanoi’s central district and take a walking tour of the Old Quarter, which dates back to the 13th century and is famous for the “36 streets of 36 wares” that were named after the original 36 artisan guilds.

Vietnam Puppet ShowEnd your day with a captivating water puppet show, a distinctive art form from northern Vietnam. Legend has it that locals would amuse themselves by controlling puppets above the water in the Red River Delta’s flooded rice fields. Featuring musical numbers and colorful wooden puppets, the program takes viewers on a musical journey through rural life and national history.

Next, make a stop at a neighborhood coffee shop to observe and take in the sounds of the Old Quarter’s everyday life before proceeding to Gioi Market, which is the corner where thousands of items are for sale, ranging from batteries and nails to motors, electronics, and refrigeration equipment. You’ll be shocked at the sheer number of modest shops in the center of the road as well as how challenging it is for motorcycles to navigate the narrow lanes.

Drive to a suburban train station in Hanoi to continue your research and take a local train back to the city center. After crossing the first French-built bridge over the Red River, get off the train and follow your guide along the tracks. You’ll pass the “cuisine street,” where you can find a lot of delicious food, before we take you to a local family’s house to have lunch with three generations of Hanoians.

Try cooked rice powder with Vietnamese spices by taking a seat at a small Banh Duc establishment. Depending on the weather, banh duc will be served either cold or hot. The next place you visit is a little store that serves a wide variety of traditional Northern cakes, including Com cake, also known as young rice, which is regarded as a staple of every Hanoian’s upbringing. To get a sense of the typical Hanoi “tube houses,” follow your guide to a little lane. You will make a stop at Banh My Lan Ong to sample their renowned Pâté and bread. You may have various Vietnamese sweets, such as Che, which are sweet soups, after the banh mi.
