How Can We Help?
Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
Morocco is not a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers who wish to openly express sexuality and/or gender identity outside of a very rigid, heterosexual binary. We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when travelling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.
Homosexuality is illegal and punishable by prison time and fines under article 489 of the Penal Code. Same-sex couples have been arrested for kissing and holding hands in Morocco. Public attitudes towards same-sex partnerships range from confusion to open hostility and can include physical violence. Travelers with non-conventional gender expression may experience harassment and, in some cases, physical violence.
LGBTQIA+ travellers who want to visit Morocco should exercise caution and avoid engaging in even mild public displays of affection such as hand-holding.
Clandestine local queer culture exists but is inaccessible to travelers. Attempting to seek out local queer culture while in Morocco poses a risk to travelers and an even more severe risk to locals.
