While most people visiting Jordan are familiar with Petra, there is much more in Jordan to see and do — from hiking oak forests in the north, to enjoying a sunset dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Amman, to snorkeling in the Red Sea in the south. Traveling to a new destination raises a lot of questions. Here are some answers to help you properly prepare for your Jordan journey.
Jordanians are known for their warm hospitality, making Jordan not only a safe place to visit, but also extremely welcoming. Although there is unrest in other areas of the Middle East, Jordan is peaceful and often referred to as “the quiet house in the noisy neighborhood.” Of course, you should still take the usual precautions you’d take most anywhere you travel in the world: Leave the expensive jewelry at home, don’t flash wads of money, keep your valuables close by or locked in a safe, and don’t wander off alone at night. If you are traveling to the northern part of Jordan, be aware that you may be asked to show your passport at checkpoints and should not attempt to cross the border.
Jordan is one of the few Middle Eastern countries where homosexuality is legal. That said, attitudes can be quite conservative and discrimination does occur. All couples should avoid public affection in Jordan as this is extremely frowned upon regardless of orientation. The capital city of Amman has gay-friendly venues and LGBTQ travelers should not be put off from travelling to Jordan and can expect to have a fascinating and fun-filled vacation.
The best time to travel to Jordan is between March and May as well as mid-September to mid-November as temperatures are hot but not overwhelming.

If you are on a budget, you can find affordable local meals — like a falafel sandwich — for a couple dinars or less, and stay in budget accommodations, like hostels in Amman and Bedouin camps in Wadi Rum for around $20-30 per night. If you’d prefer more upscale dining options and creature comforts, you will find an array of restaurant options with extensive local and international menus in Amman. Luxury hotels in Amman, Dead Sea, Petra, and Aqaba run around $200-$300+ per night. There are mid-range options and lovely boutique hotels as well, for around $150 per night. Whether you are traveling on a budget or planning to indulge, keep in mind that the typical cost per day for a tour is about $125-300.

A visa is required when travelling as a tourist from Canada or the United States. A visa can be obtained online prior to leaving for your vacation and will be valid for up to 30 days. You may also obtain a visa upon arrival at Amman Queen Alia Airport and Sheikh Hussein border crossing. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Jordan.

As one of the oldest cities in the world and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the UNESCO-listed Petra is one spectacular site in Jordan. It’s up there with the most visited attractions in Jordan, yet only 15% of this ancient city’s maze of temples, facades and tombs have been explored.
Amman is the capital city of Jordan, but that’s not its only claim to fame. The city sits on the site of Ain Ghazal, one of the world’s largest Neolithic settlements with a history dating back to the Stone Age. The statues found at this site are some of the world’s oldest, dating back to 7500 B.C.
Can’t get enough of ancient Roman architecture? Head to Jerash! One of the most interesting facts about Jordan is this ancient city was once part of the ‘Decapolis’. That means it was one of the ten most important cities on the eastern border of the Roman Empire. The ancient Roman ruins at Jerash are around 6,500 years old and include grand temples, theatres, plazas, and collonaded streets… and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to ancient Rome.
One of the most interesting facts about Jordan is that, at 420 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea here is the lowest point on Earth. But that’s not the only magical thing about this place. The water in the Dead Sea is ten times saltier than ocean water, which makes you extra buoyant so you float on top of the water.
Not only you can soothe your sore muscles by floating in the salty water, but you’ll also feel very calm here as bromine, a natural sedative, evaporates from the water.
You can also cover your body in the healing Dead Sea mud. The mud that lines the banks is said to be rich in minerals that help with everything from joint pain to skin issues… at the very least, it’s sure to leave you with soft, exfoliated skin.
Mansaf is a big part of Jordan’s history as it’s a traditional Bedouin meal dating back to the Mamluk period of 1200 AD. It’s often served on special occasions like birthdays, weddings and graduations. Mansaf is the ultimate comfort food and we can see why it’s the national dish of Jordan!
