Rhodes

Welcome to Rhodes

There is a strong medieval character that merges with the conventional Greek one in Rhodes, which is a place that has a long and significant history. It is also an island that possesses a great deal of natural beauty: the picturesque beaches are surrounded by pine forests on the mountainside; the mountain villages look out over the seaside towns; and the archaeological sites, the mediaeval monuments, and the cosmopolitan resorts that are arranged in the traditional style all work together to make this destination so popular that it is difficult to resist, even for a traveler who is very particular.
This island, which is a jewel in the Mediterranean, has a history that dates back hundreds of years; it has a stormy past that is full of surprising turns and twists of fate. During the fourth century B.C., it prospered; this is the period when the famed Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue sculpted by Charis from Lindos, Rhodes, who was a disciple of Lysippos, a skilled sculptor at the time, was created. On account of the fact that each conqueror left their own distinct imprint on this island, its history is a very rich one.
Learn about the Knights of St. John, who dominated the island from the 14th to the 16th century, as you accompany us on a time travel adventure that takes you around the town that was inhabited throughout the mediaeval period. Next, we will take you on a tour of the breathtaking landscape that Rhodes has to offer.

The Urban Area of Rhodes

There is something unique about the capital of the island: the combination of its mediaeval and modern characteristics has resulted in the creation of one of the most beautiful towns and cities in the whole globe. The walled medieval (old) town and the new town, which comprises earlier, neoclassical, and modern structures, are the two components that make up this establishment, which was established in the year 408 BC. Due to the fact that it was constructed in a semicircle around the primary harbor, the medieval town has been included on the list of World Heritage Sites maintained by UNESCO. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through its lovely lanes and down the well-known Street of the Knights, which has been reconstructed to the exact same dimensions and shape that it had during the Middle Ages. Houses belonging to individuals who were members of the Order of the Knights of St. John used to border the street during that time period.
Be sure to pay a visit to Castello, the Palace of the Grand Master, which dates back to the 14th century and is one of the earliest structures constructed by the knights in the old town. You should also check out the magnificent Clock Tower, which was constructed by Fehti Pasha in the year 1857 and provides breathtaking views of the ancient town. Also, be sure to check out the Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Museum, both of which are located in the buildings that formerly housed the Hospital of the Knights and the Panagia tis Nikis Church, for that matter. While you are there, you will be able to enjoy the remarkable artifacts and historical objects that are evidence of the island’s extensive past.

The new town is located outside the city walls, and it contains a number of really impressive buildings that date back to the time when the island was under Italian rule. These buildings include the Nomarchia, which bears a strong resemblance to the Doge’s Palace in Venice, the Post Office, the Town Hall, the National Theatre, and the Church of the Annunciation, which are all located today.
You could take a stroll around Mandraki, which is a little harbor that is adorned with two statues of deer. In addition, you should see the surrounding marina, the Windmills, and St. Nicholas’ Lighthouse. When you go to the Aquarium, which is located at the most northern point of the city, you will observe marine animals that are unique to the Aegean Sea. The inside of the aquarium is designed to look like an underwater cave. An wonderful park that is located on the southern side of the town is called Rodini. It is home to peacocks, and visitors may take a stroll along the trails that wound their way past pine and cypress trees as well as streams. A number of well-known figures, including Julius Caesar and Cicero, are said to have obtained their education at the ancient School of Rhetoric of Rhodes, which is said to have been located at Rodini. In addition, you should see the old stadium, the Odeum, and the temple of Pythios Apollo, which are all located atop Agios Stefanos Hill, also known as Monte Smith or the acropolis of ancient Rhodes.
