Welcome to Hydra
Find out everything about your holidays with Eskapas! Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. One of the main reasons why Hydra is a popular destination is its proximity to Athens, as a ferry from Athens to Hydra, will get you to the beautiful island in just 2 hours. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway!
Having been a filming location of “A girl in black” and “Boy on a dolphin” movies, as well as a holiday destination for Leonard Cohen, Hydra stands out for its classy beauty!
On Hydra island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their foot, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens.
However, despite the fact that the history is fairly fascinating, the most beautiful thing about Hydra is the opportunity to unwind at a café and meander aimlessly around its back alleys. Once, I made the decision to climb upward from my hotel, and what started off as a little detour turned out to be a great little adventure. I had no intention of doing anything more than taking a leisurely stroll; but, I found myself drawn to one appealing path after another, which eventually led me to the highest point of the town. Here, shabby dwellings were able to take in breathtaking vistas, exhausted burros wandered around unrestrained, and island life continued on without regard for the presence of tourists.
There is no shortage of places to swim in Hydra, despite the fact that the beaches on the island are not very exciting. Within the confines of Hydra town, there is a single swimming place that features a set of stairs that descend from the pavement to a number of tiny concrete platforms that are connected to the water via ladders. Moreover, Mandraki Bay, Kaminia Castello, and Vlychos are three of the better beaches that are located within a nice and easy walking distance of the town. It is recommended that you use a boat to travel to the beaches that are located on the southwestern point of the island, specifically Bisti and Agios Nikolaos. These beaches are located in a remote location.
It is around fifteen minutes of walking down the seaside route until I get to the charming and rustic village of Kaminia, which is hidden behind the headland from Hydra. I make my way there as the sun begins to set. My favorite, enticing supper views on Hydra can be found at the taverna in Kaminia, which is positioned on a hill above the port. The pocket-sized harbor in Kaminia provides cover for the fishing boats that are used by the town. As I watch the sun sink into the Saronic Gulf, I am enjoying a drink of ouzo and some nibbles while sitting on the veranda.
