Spetses

Enjoy a romantic journey around Spetses, in horse-drawn carriages and take in the magnificent houses that dot the tiny alleys that are paved with cobblestones; this will be an unforgettable experience. During the month of September, Spetses hosts “Armata,” a re-enactment of a naval war that has been going on since 1931 and is considered to be one of the most stunning events of its kind. The “Spetsathlon” and the “Spetses Mini Marathon” are two of the most distinctive athletic competitions that take place every year in April and October, respectively. These events attract thousands of competitors, and if you are a sports fan, you will not want to miss out on them. The Spetsathlon is the most popular triathlon in Greece, and it attracts competitors from all over the world and from every region of Greece. These competitors compete in the Swimming, Biking, and Running events. On the other side, the Spetses Mini Marathon brings together competitors and spectators who are interested in running and swimming competitions for those who are still young in heart!

Spetses, an island that has a long history of naval service, is well-known for the vital role it played in the War of Independence at the beginning of the 1821 decade. At this location, on April 3, 1821, the flag of the revolution was hoisted for the first time. Due to the fact that the island’s large captain houses have been meticulously kept, the island has been able to keep its distinct traditional character. These mansions continue to serve as a powerful testament to the island’s historic history.

Taking in the sights of the island

There are a number of locations on the island that are well worth going to, and they all represent the island’s long and illustrious nautical culture and history.

The Bouboulina House of Residence

During the latter part of the 17th century, the structure was constructed in the shape of a Π, a particular design element that, at that time, served to convey the significance of the proprietor. Bouboulina was a heroine who appeared in the War of Independence in 1821 and had a crucial part in the conflict. When you go to her home, which is now a museum, you can appreciate the wood-carved Florentine ceiling, furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries, an intriguing collection of antique weaponry, excellent ceramics, and rare books.

Hatzigiannis Mexis, the House of Hatzigiannis

Relics from the battle of Independence, letters written by battle heroes such as Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, a collection of folk art, and the relics of Bouboulina are all shown in the museum that is currently housed in the home. The successors of the Mexis family gave the home to the Greek state in 1938. It was constructed between the years 1795 and 1798, and it was given to the Greek state. Over four thousand years of the island’s history are represented by the items that are currently on exhibit.

The Panayia Armata Church

This rural church was constructed between the years 1824 and 1830 when it was constructed.

The Ayios Nikolaos Cathedral

One of the most significant historical events that took place on the island was the raising of the flag of independence on April 3, 1821, which is why the Cathedral is of such tremendous significance. Additionally, it was at this location where the dead body of Paul Bonaparte, who was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte and had traveled to Greece to fight on the side of the Greeks, was preserved in a barrel of rum for a period of three years on end!

Beaches

Go to the beaches of the island, where the sun is shining brightly, and swim in the clear waters while the pine forest serves as a gorgeous backdrop:

Ayioi Anargyroi is one of the major beaches on the southwest side of the island, and it is known for having seas that are both clean and deep. Additionally, it provides facilities for water sports.
At a distance of 12 kilometers from Dápia, the sandy beach known as Ayia Paraskevi may be found on the western side of the island. The name of the place comes from the Ayia Paraskevi church, which is located nearby. Moreover, there are facilities for water sports accessible.
• Ayia Marina is the most well-known beach on the island, and it is located two kilometers to the south-east of Dapia. Sandy, neatly arranged with a large number of eateries and beach bars. Both those who enjoy the sun and those who are interested in water sports may reach here by bus or by boat.
• Xylokériza is a completely isolated beach located in the south-eastern portion of the island, eight kilometers away from Dapia, and is mostly accessible by boat.
• Vréllos is a stunning beach with sand that is located on the western side of the island. It is not surprising that it is dubbed “Paradise” given that it is encircled by a thick pine forest. It is also possible to begin a lovely walking path that leads to Profitis Elias, the highest point on the island, from the beach, which is a perfect starting location.
• Zogeriá: The locals consider it to be the most beautiful beach on the island due to the presence of pine trees that extend all the way down to the beach and the brilliant blue waves. In the event that the weather permits, you will be able to take in a beautiful view all the way to Nafplio!
