Nafplio

Nafplio

In addition to being one of the most romantic cities in all of Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the newly formed Greek state between the years 1823 and 1834. It is also considered to be one of the most attractive towns in the region of Argolis, which is located in the eastern part of the Peloponnese.

Nafplio, the son of the deity Poseidon and the daughter of Danaus (Danaida) Anymone, is said to have established the town, as stated in the mythology. The history of the settlement may be traced back to the prehistoric period, when troops from this location took part in both the Argonautic voyage and the Trojan War. The town saw a downturn during the Roman era, but it had a resurgence of prosperity during the Byzantine era. They put their stamp on the town and had a significant impact on its culture, architecture, and customs throughout the course of several centuries. Frankish, Venetian, and Turkish invaders were among those who left their mark.

Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and sculptures, Ottoman fountains, and Venetian or neoclassical structures all have the ability to captivate visitors with their one-of-a-kind architectural designs combined with their stunning beauty.

By following a dream trail, you will be able to discover the unique pearls that Nafplio has to offer, beginning with the medieval Old Town, the tiny cobblestone streets, the neoclassical homes that have been wonderfully kept, with bougainvillea trees gracing their yards and balconies, and the Turkish fountains. When you visit the Italianate Syntagma Square, which is located in the very center of the city, you will have the opportunity to appreciate significant ancient structures and monuments. Among the buildings that stand out are the two Turkish mosques (the first of which was the location of the first “Mutual Learning” School and is now used as a cinema/theatre, and the second of which was the location of the first Greek Parliament), the Archaeological Museum, which contains significant artifacts from the Prehistoric and Mycenaean eras, and the Municipal Gallery. Both the church of Agios Georgios, which has noteworthy murals such as a replica of the classic Leonardo da Vinci work “The secret Dinner,” and the church of Agios Spyridonas, which was the location of the assassination of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias, are located in close proximity to the contemporary city.

The Palamidi Castle, which boldly commands a height of 216 meters above sea level, is the next destination. You have to ascend each and every one of its 999 stairs that are cut into the rock in order to get there. Don’t be concerned, however, for the view from this vantage point is absolutely gratifying! Venture into a location that is steeped in history, where the well-known hero of the Greek Revolution, Theodore Kolokotronis, had been imprisoned. It appears as though the battlements of this location, which were named after the well-known ancient heroes Themistocles, Achilles, Fokion, Leonidas, Epaminondas, and Miltiades, are still vigilantly guarding the city. There is little question that the Agios Andreas battlement, which was constructed by Venetian invaders at the very top of the castle, provides breathtaking views over the Argolic gulf and the Mycenaean plain beyond.

At the base of Palamidi hill lies a historic rock known as Akronafplia, which is also referred to by its Turkish name, “Its Kale,” which literally translates to “inner castle.” The peninsula has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is composed of three levels. Within these three levels are three separate castles, with the western castle being the oldest of the three on the peninsula. The ancient acropolis, which was protected by polygonal Cyclopean walls, was located at that particular location.

Bourtzi, a Venetian tiny castle that is situated on the rocky islet of Agioi Theodoroi, is the location that serves as the point of reference for Nafplio and is also the location that receives the most photographs. During the time when the Venetians were in control of the area, it was linked to Akronafplia by means of a massive metal chain that protected the port from assaults by hostile vessels. Bourtzi was the location where the executioners of Palamidi captives used to reside at the beginning of the year 1860. You may get to the stronghold during the summer months by taking a boat that departs from the harbor on a regular basis. You could even be able to visit one of the intriguing events that are taking place on the islet if you are fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity.
