Alexandria

Welcome to Alexandria

The 19th century kick-started a cosmopolitan makeover and renaissance when Alexandria became one of the Mediterranean’s key commercial hubs. This revival was cut short in the 1950s by President Nasser’s nationalism. Today the imposing modern library of Alexandria sits amid faded remnants of the once-grand seafront Corniche, as a symbol of the city’s latest incarnation as Egypt’s cultural capital.

What is Alexandria famous for?

It was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library, the largest in the ancient world; and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

What happened to the city of Alexandria?

Only Rome, which gained control of Egypt in 30 BC, eclipsed Alexandria in size and wealth. The city fell to the Arabs in AD 641, and a new capital of Egypt, Fustat, was founded on the Nile.

Is it worth visiting Alexandria?

Today, the city offers fascinating insights into its proud Greek past, as well as interesting mosques, the casino strip of the Corniche, some lovely gardens and both modern and traditional hotels
